Well, we're back from our summer tour. We call it a summer tour but it started in June and ended in October, now that's a long summer. We started on the East coast went to the West coast and back, then went from the Northeast down South through Florida and then as far West as Texas and back to the Northeast, a lot of miles were put on the bus. Things have been going great with The New Riders (present day economy aside), In the middle of all this touring we found the time to get into the studio and record all the new songs, some we've been playing out on the road and some that won't be heard till the CD comes out early next year, if all goes well. We have a few shows coming up on the East coast in mid-October and early November then we head to the Northwest for our annual after Thanksgiving tour. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves for that one. In the meantime everyone is staying pretty busy Ronnie's running his business David is gearing up and will be doing his annual West coast harvest tour with David Nelson and Friends, Michael has released his new CD called We Are All One  and has already gotten some great reviews. You can read them on his Reviews page. The CD features some old friends like the late Vassar Clements, Buddy Cage, Melvin Seals, Garth Hudson and Jorma to name a few. Check it out. Johnny and Buddy are doing some Stir Fried gigs and as always Buddy's hard at work at Jam on 17 on Sirus Radio. We're looking foward to the up coming shows and the jst announced New Years Eve show at the Silo. More on that and the whole New Years Eve run later. Stay tuned.... NRPS

We just spent the last few days in the studio cutting tracks for a new CD which we hope to have out early next year. We got 7 basic tracks down and will be going back in the studio soon to cut some more. Then as the next few weeks unfold we'll be putting the finishing touches on the tracks. We cut a bunch of the new Nelson/Hunter tunes as well as some others. We are excited about all this and are looking forward to getting the CD out into the world in the new year......NRPS

Also it looks like we're almost sold out for our Turkey Trot Show on the Aug. 23 and they might be adding a Sunday show on the 24th. If you're interested give a call at (607) 659-7849 and get the low down

Here's a great review by Randi Kent Mattson of Saturday's Mighty High show.

Wow! What a wonderful festival this was. Held in a little jewel of a park, Vasa Park in Hackettstown, NJ, this festival was one of the best I have been to. Scaled down to an intimate 1,200 - 1,500 people (including about 200 VIP ticket holders) in a beautifully pastoral and appropriately-sized setting, and on a perfect weather day, this was so much fun! The New Riders played from about 1:15 to 2:45 in the afternoon and ripped the roof off as the gorgeous sun and blue sky rippled down through the trees. Their new tunes are just fantastic! [Ghost Train Blues featured a wonderfully down and dirty psychedelic jam, Down the Middle is a gorgeous Nelson vocal, and John Markowsky's Higher was so totally appropriate! Then, just as the audience had a little chance to catch our collective breaths, do a little shopping and grab a bite to eat, DSO did a Terrapin Nation show that was a killer and made the late afternoon such a dreamy experience. After the DSO set, about 7:30, all attendees but the VIP ticket holders, were gently ushered out and by 8 PM the VIPs went into an indoor area that was actually a big catering hall with a stage at one end, a soundboard in the middle, and a bar in the back, and settled in for a remarkable show by the Zen Tricksters which included a 40 minute encore and ended at midnight. This fest was the big surprise of the season for me and I sincerely hope one that will be around for many years to come. The vibe was excellent--real loosey goosey--and smiles and good will were everywhere. Congratulations to the promoters for really getting it right! I'll be back, for sure!

PS The Tricksters late show was off the charts, they were also joined a bunch of guest, Rob Barraco, Lisa Mackey, Wendy Lanter, Michael Falzarano and Ronnie Penque furthering the family affair that this whole day was........NRPS

July 29/08

Well, the bus is on it's way back east after a whirlwind tour out west. First stop will be Rochester, NY then it's on to Connecticut for The Gathering Of the Vibes. After a few days off the summer tour will continue into September and beyond. While out west we played three shows in Colorado one in Wyoming, three in California and one in Nevada. In Colorado we played The Fox Theater in Boulder, Quixotes True Blue in Denver and a little town festival in Carbondale which drew the biggest crowd they ever had, about a 1000 people. We also went up to Gillette Wyoming and played the BMW International Rally to about 8000 people. Then we headed to California where we were joined by our friends Moonalice for three shows and ended at The Trinity Tribal Stomp before heading east. The shows with Moonalice were tons of fun, many of our old friends are in the band and stayed around to sit in with us. The first night at The Great American Music Hall Michael's old partners in crime from Hot Tuna, Jack Cassady and Pete Sears sat in on Wille and the Hand Jive. Then later in the set Barry Sless came out for a bunch of songs and rocked the house. The next night at The Mystic Theater again we were joined by Jack Cassady and Pete Sears and this time G.E. Smith joined in the fun for what many said was the best jam of the tour, Deep Elem Blues. Then after a few more tunes on our own Mark Karan from Rat Dog came out for a few tunes followed by Mr. Sless for a bunch of songs. Both Mark and Barry joined us for the grand finale Take A letter Maria. The four lead guitar attack off Nelson, Cage, Sless and Karan took the roof off the joint, what a night. The last night of the run with the Moonalice gang at Crystal Bay we were joined by Pete, Barry and Roger McNamee for a rocking Friend Of The Devil and Going Down The Road Feeling Bad. To say the west coast was fun would be a bit of an understatement. We can't wait to get back there in November. Well, I think that about covers it. See ya at the shows.... NRPS

July 3/08

We are sorry to have to inform you that we will not be performing at The Grateful Garcia Gathering this year. We tried our best to make it work but to no avail, and we were dropped from the lineup when the festival decided to downsize. Below are two relative statements. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused our fans.

Here’s the statement put out by The Grateful Garcia Gathering

Due to unforeseen hard economic unstable times which have fallen on everyone this summer (including outdoor music festivals), as a direct result due to the mortgage crisis, high oil-gasoline prices, and soaring food costs, we had to make a choice to down size our show at GGG. Again, we're sorry to all parties involved. We hope you understand, and we're very, very sorry for the situation we've caused DJtT, and NRPS... But under these circumstances, it was the right thing to do.

Here’s the statement put out by the Donna Jean and The Tricksters camp

We’re very sorry to have to announce that, along with our friends the New Riders, we’ve been forced to cancel our plans to play at the Grateful Garcia Gathering this year due to insurmountable production issues. We played it last year, and look forward to doing so in the future. But we can only play a show when all the pieces are in place to make it right for you – as well as us – and that’s not the case this year. We look forward to seeing you elsewhere this summer.

June 18/08

Well, here we are more then half way through our June run and things have been going great. Today is our second day at The Lucas School House in St. Louis where our friend Rob Koritz from DSO has been sitting in with us. Then it's off to Chicago, Minneapolis and Waupaca, WI. for a total of 14 dates in 16 days with a recording session for our friend Rick Redington for his new CD called The Circus on one of the days off. No rest for the weary around here. All in all it's been smooth sailing all the way. All of the shows have been cool for us, we had an absolute blast at The Mountain Brewing CO. in West Virginia and tons of fun up in Vermont and New Hampshire and our friends Jeff Mattson and Jan London joined us at Mexicali for two rocking nights. We've been working out some of the new Nelson/Hunter songs, playing them live and molding then as we go with more to follow. We finish up in a few days then it's off for about two weeks then we start up again for our summer tour which looks like it'll be going till some time in September, As they say It's All Good. See ya at the shows..... NRPS

June 5/08

This just in, on June 8th we are playing a benefit show in Millerton, NY for The Rex Foundation, this was going to be a private affair and still is to some extent but they have decided to open it up to a few tickets sales so if you're interested you can call 845 527 6337 there are only a few tickets left so act quickly if you want in. See ya There......NRPS

May 14/08

Back from our short early May run, as always we had a blast at all the shows. Our show at the 8x10 was a stand out though, Mookie Siegel sat in all night (as he did at the Ramshead) and then when we were just about done we got word that Barry Sless was on his way down from his gig up in Philadelphia with Moonalice. So we took a short break and came back with Mr. Sless and did a third set and as you might guess Barry was on fire, as he is wherever and whenever he plays. As we get ready to begin our summer touring schedule a few other things are bubbling up. We continue to work up the new Hunter/Nelson songs along with some others. We're also still trying to track down a few other songs written by John Dawson, and work up some songs by Johnny, Ronnie and Michael. We'll keep you posted on that. Some new things to check out on the web Buddy Cage has got his new website up and running, www.roadcage.com stop by and say hi. Michael's got a new instructional video on Jorma Kaukonen's Breakdown Way which is a site where you can go an view lessons by various players. Michael's been teaching his Blue For Beginners a class that give the fundamental's of blues guitar at Jorma's guitar camp The Fur Peace Ranch for over ten years and you can check it out online. Breakdown Way is a new endeavor Jorma got going about a year ago. There are many great lesson up on the site so if you play guitar you should check it out. For all of you out in the Bay Area keep your David Nelson antenna up because David will be playing a bunch of shows out that way this week Starting with the Wavy Gravy Birthday bash. We have a lot of shows coming up starting in early June and going straight through October, so we hope to see ya at the shows...... NRPS

April 14/08

Just finished up our short Spring run with four great shows, two at FTC, one at The Knitting Factory and one at Waterstreet. All of the shows were loads of fun but as you might guess the show in NYC was off the charts. We're really excited to have played a hand full of the new songs at these shows and we would like the thank the fans for all the positive feed back about them, there'll be more to come. We have a few days off then we head down to The Keswick Theater, there are still some tickets left for that show so if you're interested you can get at the venue or online. Also our forum is back up and running and we'll do our best to keep it spam free. You'll have to re-register then your in. You have to re-register so that we can control incoming spam. Time to get back on the bus and head home for a few days. See you at The Keswick Theater......NRPS

April 04/08

Well we're all back home from a very successful NRPS camp and getting ready for the handful of shows we're going to play next week. As I said in the last post we went up to Turkey Trot to put together some new songs and that we did. We came away with about 12 new ones, a bunch of which were written by David Nelson and Robert Hunter along with some written by Michael, Johnny and Ronnie. All under the watchful eyes and ears of Buddy Cage, nothing gets by him. We had a blast and Pete and Sherry couldn't have been better hosts. I think we all gained a few pounds up there. Let me tell you this, they know how to cook. We're all looking forward to getting back up there for our third annual summer show for them, which at this point looks like it'll be on August 23. Along with these 12 songs we got together we have about 10 song ideas that we'll be working on as we go. We're very excited about these new songs and are hoping to play some of them on these up coming dates but don't worry there'll still be plenty of classic NRPS. We're also hoping that maybe John "Marmaduke" Dawson can contribute in some way, maybe with some never heard before songs he's written in recent years. We have loads of new shows coming in for the Summer staring with a few shows in May and then longer tours starting in June and going right through October and on to the end of the year. We'll be playing all kinds of venues all over the country. We'll be doing clubs, theaters, festivals and outdoor parks and we hope to see you there... Also our good friend Johnny Rider has gotten his Rider Base up at a new web address you should check it out here's the address www.riderbase.info. He has just about everything we've done listed there since we started this NRPS renaissance. The renaissance continues..... NRPS

March 28/08

It's been awhile but things have not been idle around here. Before we go any further, we here at NRPS central would like to send our deepest  condolences out to the family of Martin Fierro who passed away on March 13 he was a friend and will be missed. The good news is, that great band up in the sky just got one bad ass horn player better, jam on brother. We would also like to send our condolences to Tex and Jody Logan on there loss with the passing of wife and mother Peggy Logan. OK, well the NRPS are together in up state NY, Pete at Turkey Trot Acres offer up his place for us so we all came  together to work on a bunch of new songs that we'll be playing in the coming months with the hopes of recording a new studio album later this year. To say we're excited about all this is a bit of an under statement. So we hope to see ya all at the up coming shows. Speaking of the shows we have a few great ones coming up in April starting with FTC STAGE ONE in Fairfield CT. We've played this place a bunch of times and it has always sold out so get your tickets early it's going to be fun. Then we head into NYC for a show at the KNITTING FACTORY this will be our first time in the big room at The Knit and we're looking forward to it. In the past when we've played NYC we played sold out shows at The Canal Room and The Concert Hall of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. But they no longer want us at those places it seems we were to wild and our fans were to out of control, all I can say is Give me a break. In fact the Society for Ethical Culture has flat out banned us from ever playing there again, oh well. So we're hoping to sell out the KNITTING FACTORY blow the roof off the joint and just stick to The Canal Room and The Concert Hall. We hope to see you there, so get your tickets early and help us with this mission. Then from there it's off to the  WATER STREET MUSIC HALL in Rochester NY for another first time play so all you NRPS fans up that way stop in and say hi. From there we head to a show we're really excited about at the KESWICK THEATER, again this will be  our first time at that theater. Tickets are  going fast for this one so you might want to get them early Boris Garcia will be opening the show. We have loads of shows being booked over the next bunch of months so stay tuned and check our tour page. Also we would like to thank the whole gang at Sirius Radio, Jam on 17 and Outlaw Country for playing NRPS music and for there continuing support. Viva La Renaissance....... See Ya at the Shows..... We have some really exciting stuff coming down the pike more on all that as it unfolds. We here at NRPS central want to send our Congratulations to our old friend Levon Helm on his winning the Grammy for the best traditional folk album. Till next time....... NRPS

One of our own is in need of some help and we thought we'd reach out and see if any of you might be able to assist.

On October 27, 2007, long time NRPS fan Tracy Schneider was run down by an SUV right in front of the Bolton Theater in Bayshore, New York, right before the 9:30pm New Riders show there. Tracy flew in from Chicago to see this show with her New York hometown friends, but wound up in the hospital and fortunately is recovering from some very serious injuries.

Tracy is looking for anyone who may have witnessed this event. If you did and are willing to help a fellow NRPS fan out, please contact her at: tracyhschneider@yahoo.com

Thanks for your support .........NRPS

Nov. 05/07

We just got back from a quick run up into Canada. We played a 500 seat theater called Festival Place in Sherwood Park which is in Edmonton. Some of us had a little bit of a hassle crossing the border but in the end it all worked out. The show was sold out in advance which is always great and I must say the crowd was fantastic and really into hearing us do our thing, and we had a blast doing it. I'm sure we'll be back again next year. We have a little bit of time off now before we head out to the west coast later this month, we looking forward to that tour and have a few tricks and surprises up our sleeves, so we hope to see you at the shows...... Sept. 07/07

First off we apologize for the site being down for awhile. We had some trouble with the server but everything seems to be working fine now.

Well, our long summer tour came to an end with a bang this past weekend finishing up in San Francisco at the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love show in Golden Gate Park where we played to about 50,000 people, some say 80,000 either way it was a lot of people. To say is was a blast is quite the understatement. Then the next day we played The Sausalito Arts Festival to more then 5000 people. Now a short recap of how we spent our summer. Starting back in late June we embarked on our summer tour and in that two and a half months we traveled on two different tour buses, boarded 16 planes, drove about ten different vans and two trucks. Along the way we played 33 shows, 13 festivals, 8 theaters and a bunch of really great clubs. We also met up with and were joined on stage by a lot of old and new friends, like Peter Rowan, Donna Jean Godchaux, Mookie Siegel, Jeff Austin, Bob Matthews, Tony Trischka, Reid Genauer, Maria Muldaur, David Gans, Jeff Mattson and on Labor Day, at the Sausalito Arts Festival wearing a cowboy hat and a big smile and playing his gold top Les Paul we were joined by Mark Karan of Rat Dog. Mark has gone through his second round of chemo with flying colors, and he’s ready to kick ass on the third round. I'll tell you this, sitting in with us on Johnny Markowski's song Higher he definitely and defiantly kicked ass big time and took that song to a whole other level. Now, last but not lest we were joined by someone we've been trying to hook up with from day one of this New Riders renaissance, John "Marmaduke" Dawson the man that started it all some 30 years ago. Words can not describe how great it was to have him walk out on stage with us for the three shows he was able to join us for, The String Summit at Horning's Hideout  in North Plains just outside of Portland, the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love show in Golden Gate Park and The Sausalito Arts Festival. The word is he might be joining us again when we return to the west coast for our November tour, we'll be keeping our collective fingers crossed for that one. All in all the summer tour was fantastic and now we're looking forward to our fall and winter tours that are for the most part already booked. We'll be posting all the new dates in a few days as well as putting up some new photos on the photo page from all this summers goings on. Well, I think that's about it for now. See ya at the shows.....NRPS

PS Some updates have already been made to the Photo and Tour Dates pages. Check them out....

Aug. 26/07

Just back from our run up into the Northwest to The String Summit at Horning's Hideout  in North Plains which is about an hour outside of Portland. It was along way to go for one show but it was worth every minute of travel time. The String Summit is put on by The Yonder Mountain String Band, a nicer bunch of guys you're not gonna find, great players to boot and the folks out in the crowd could not have been more welcoming.  That said something we've been working on since the first days of this New Riders renaissance which started almost two years ago now finally came together when John "Marmaduke" Dawson step on stage with us for the first time. The crowd gave him a very warm welcome and made him feel at home. He sang and played guitar on Portland Women and then came back to sing back up on Panama Red and Dead Flowers. We hope to see him again at the 40 anniversary of the Summer Of Love show in Golden Gate Park on Sept. 2 and then again the next night at The Sausalito Arts Fair. To say that everyone in the band were thrilled that this came together is a giant understatement. We can't wait till it happens again. Marmaduke rocks again......NRPS

July 26/07

Ok, we know it's been awhile but it's been busy as hell here. A lot has happened since the last time we posted. Here are a few of the high lights. first off we headlined the LONGS PARK AMPHITHEATER  and played to 8500 people, it was a blast and everyone stayed till the very end. Then we returned to PEACHES GRILL and on to the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago. From there we drove after the show 12 hours on the bus to the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival which was fabulous, then after we where done with our set we got back on the bus and drove 5 hours to the air port to catch a plane to Pennsylvania to play the BEARS PICNIC Music Festival for two days. Our old friend Peter Rowan was there performing and sat in with us on Sunday night. On Saturday night Donna Jean and The Tricksters played just before us and Jeff, Donna and Mookie sat in with us for our set. Everybody was rocking. Then it was back on a plane and a flight to St. Louis. Needless to say we welcomed a few days off before playing our first of two shows at The LUCAS SCHOOL. Three more shows to go and our July segment of the summer tour is done. Then a week at home and back on the road for part two, August. Oh yeah while up at the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival someone gave us a copy of a local magazine called the Weekly Freak and right there on page two was our very own David Nelson who had earned the title of "Freak Of The Week" and there you have it one hell of a hectic week......NRPS

July 14/07

Our July run is under way now, we started off at the SELLERSVILLE THEATER 1894 on Thursday and played the Narrows Center For The Arts llast night. We've played the Sellersville Theater three times now, all sold out shows and hope to be back there soon. This was our First time at The Narrows, no better way for a first time play then with a sell out. So, thanks to all the folks that came out and help sell these shows out. Tonight we'll be at MAHAIWE THEATER and we hope to see you there. Got to go get on the bus and head down the road. See ya at the shows..... NRPS

June 12/07

First off a big Happy Birthday to David Nelson on this June 12. We'll be heading out to start our summer touring later this month and everyone here at NRPS central is looking forward to that. As usual everybody has been staying pretty busy doing gigs, recording, producing and in the case of Buddy Cage radio. Speaking of radio we've been getting some radio air play on a few of the songs from the ArSeaEm Records CD Live New Years Eve 2006 recorded by Bob and Betty. We know Garden Of Eden, Any Naked Eye and Instant Armadillo Blues have been played and Any Naked Eye is going into rotation on some Triple A stations around the country. David Nelson fans will remember Any Naked Eye from back in The David Nelson Band days and can still hear him perform the song now with The NRPS and with David Nelson and Friends.     Back at home from our SOLD OUT weekend, along with The Landmark Theater the shows at The Acoustic Cafe and Johnny's Birthday Bash were loads of fun. At The Acoustic Cafe our new friend Reid Genauer from the band Assembly of Dust opened the show and then sat in with us on a few tunes, Friend Of The Devil, Peggy O and Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35. It Was great to have him and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him in the future. On Sunday at Johnny's Birthday Bash we were joined by our old friends Jan London and Joanne Lediger of Stir Fried. All in all the weekend run was a blast with friends old and new. We're putting the final dates together for our summer tour which starts mid June and runs pretty much till September. Should be interesting, see you at the shows.... NRPS

Getting ready to head out on a short three day run up in the Northeast. All though the band has had some down time everybody stayed pretty busy doing other gigs, studio dates and in the case of Buddy Cage radio shows. Johnny and Ronnie played gigs with their bands, Stir Fried and The Neon Gods. Michael spent his time in the studio producing an album for Marjorie Thomson on which Buddy played along with Barry Mitterhoff of Hot Tuna and working on his next CD. Buddy as mentioned before did his Radio gig on Sirus along with various studio dates and David played numerous show on the west coast including a few with Phil Lesh. The ArSeaEm Records CD The New Riders of the Purple Sage - Live New Years Eve 2006 is now officially available at our shows and from the ArSeaEm Records website www.nrpslive.com. Call your local Radio station and make a request and help make something happen. Tonight's show at the Landmark Theater on Long Island is already sold out as are the shows up in Connecticut at the Acoustic Cafe and Johnny's birthday bash. Making to this whole little run sold out now that I think of it. You can't beat that. Also Donna Jean and the Tricksters will be opening the show tonight so I suspect there'll be some intermingling going on tonight on stage and as is often the case with the NRPS some special guests will be sitting in, we just never know who. Well, that's it for now see ya at the shows.... NRPS

Feb. 1/07

Well now, that was an adventure. We left Denver on Tuesday morning to play our show at SHERPA AND YETIS in Breckenridge which we did and had a fantastic time. But while we were playing it started snowing, not hard but snowing none the less. The plan was to drive back to Denver that night then head up to Edwards in the morning to play the RUMPUS ROOM. But as soon as we started driving we realized two things, the pass was restricted for Trucks and busses, they had to have chains and we didn't have any. Just buy some, sounds easy enough, but nooo. There were none to be had anywhere on our side of the pass. To make a long story short we had to have some friends drive one of us back to Denver in their car, the only place that had them which took about 5 hours. by that time we had already been on the bus for about 20 hours and had to go directly to the gig in Edwards. So, now it's Thursday morning and we just got back to the Denver hotel. Life on the road.....On another note it looks like the DVD "Wanted: Live At Turkey Trot" which we shot last summer will be available some time early April. it took longer to get it together then we expected but it did come together. We know a lot of you have been asking about it, just hold on a bit longer and it will be out. For all of you that put in preorders thanks for your understanding....... NRPS

Jan. 26/07

Last Night at the Granada Theater was rockin'. Here's a review from the Dallas Morning News that pretty much sums it up.........NRPS

The Dallas Morning News / January 26, 2007

New Riders of the Purple Sage high in the saddle at Granada
By Matt Weitz

The intersection of rock 'n' roll and country has gone through many permutations, more than a few of them centered on Texas. After all, there was Willie, then Killbilly, and current hybrids like Eleven Hundred Springs. With only about 10,000 artists in between.

But before there was a Texas progressive country scene, or alt country, or Americana, there was the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the California group that was born in the shadow of the Grateful Dead.

They went on to middling success, then petered out, but returned Thursday night at the Granada Theater to play a triumphant two-set show that was long on vibe and virtuosity.

Helmed by founding member David Nelson and longtime contributor Buddy Cage, the group – unlike many in a similar situation – didn't suffer from the addition of newer supporting members.

The band played a long, two-set show for slightly over 200 fans, starting out with "I Don't Know You" and "Watcha Gonna Do," from their self-titled 1971 debut.

Although it could have easily been an oldies show, the music was fresh and immediate. Mr. Cage is one of the most impressive pedal-steel players active these days, and all the other members of the band shared singing duties, capturing close harmonies and a certain innocent, adenoidal sound reminiscent of the Byrds and other California bands from the '60s.

Mr. Nelson was an old coffeehouse chum of Mr. Garcia's, an association underlined by a version of the grease monkey's lament "Fifteen Days Under the Hood" that sounded very much like "Truckin'," followed by the old folkie chestnut "Peggy O," a Dead standard.

But the band never sounded derivative or stale, even when showing its roots. Mr. Nelson's guitar leads were agile and sharp, and Mr. Cage not only delivered the swooping lyricism associated with his instrument, but a lot of unusual atmospherics as well.

In between new songs – which, entirely contrary to the cliché, were as good as the faves – the group did beloved numbers like the entrepreneurial "Henry" and the surprisingly vulnerable groupie song "Portland Woman."

They also essayed good covers, including vintage pop ("Take a Letter, Maria"), the obligatory Dylan ("Absolutely Sweet Marie") and the Rolling Stones (an epic "Let It Bleed").

An encore version of the Hunter/Garcia classic "Ripple" only underscored similarities that were present throughout the entire show. The glory of the evening was that despite their obvious footing in the past, the New Riders were not just an echo or reflection of their thing, but still a credible version of that thing itself.

Jan. 25/07

Started our winter tour last night down in Austin, "Going down to Austin, going down to watch, the armadillo rootin', armadillo rootin' on the ground" To say we had a blast would be a giant understatement. The crowd was fantastic and with us from the first note till the last, making us feel right at home. This was the first show after a three week layoff, so we were fired up and ready to rock, and rock we did, playing two sets both more then two hours long. And if that weren't enough two songs into the second set the 93 year old legendary piano player Pinetop Perkins came out and sat in with us, Wow. We backed him up on three or four songs including I Got My Mojo Working and How Long Blues. Check out the photo up on the photo page. We can only hope that when and if we make it to his age we have half as much energy. Pinetop my man you rock! Now it's off to Dallas and beyond.....NRPS

We here at NRPS Central are saddened by the news of the passing of legendary pedal steel player "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow who was 72. For those of you who don't know he co-founded influential 1960s country-rock group the Flying Burrito Brothers along with two former members of the Byrds, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman. He also did a ton of session work on albums by the likes of John Lennon (Mind Games), Fleetwood Mac (Heroes are Hard to Find) and Joni Mitchell (Blue). He will be missed. Rest in peace.....NRPS

Dec. 31/06

Happy New Year. We hope the coming year is a happy, safe and prosperous one for all. 2006 was a fantastic year for the renaissance of The New Riders of the Purple Sage. We toured extensively and played over a 100 shows in just about every state and Canada, many of which, including our last four shows were sold out. We want to thank everyone who came out to the shows and music fans everywhere who go out and support live music. You make it happen. We released eight CDs from our "Sound Board Series" which are recorded by our ace sound man Tim "Sound Dawg" Stiegler. In July we shot a DVD at Turkey Trot Acres which we hope to get out early in 2007. Bob and Betty came out from San Francisco to record our New Year's Eve show for a CD release later this year on RCM LIVE Records. We did two benefits, one for The Rex Foundation in New York City and another for Senator Patrick Leahy in Washington, D.C. with Bob Weir and Mickey Hart and The Flying Other Brothers. We also got to play at the art show that unveiled five oil on canvas paintings Jerry Garcia created while attending the San Francisco Institute of Art under the teaching of Elmer Bishof. We want to thank all the great musicians that came out to play with us in 2006: Robert Hunter, Peter Rowan, Bob Weir, Mark Karan and Jeff Chimenti of Rat Dog, John Popper, Donna Jean Godchaux, David Gans, Tom Constanten, Bob Matthews, Darlene DiDomenico, Gary Vogensen, Professor Louie, Larry Packer, Jeff Mattson, Wendy Lanter, Keller Williams, Eric Weisberg, Kenny Kosek, Joanne Lediger, Mookie Siegel, Billy Laymon, Pete Sears and Commander Cody. Wow, that's a list! Thanks to all of you -- you're the best. 2006 also found our own David Nelson at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville playing with Jesse McReynolds. He became the first ever performer to play a Grateful Dead song at the Opry when he played and sang Ripple. We hear there wasn't a dry eye in the house. That's why Nelson is team leader. Our only disappointment was that we were not able to get John Dawson out to the show at The Aladdin Theater in Portland, OR. We were talking to him about coming out to that show, but it just didn't work out. He just wasn't ready to travel all the way from Mexico. John's music is The New Riders of the Purple Sage, and we hope he can join us at some point so he can again feel the love the fans have for him. Our fingers are crossed for 2007. We want to thank all the promoters, club and theater owners and festival bookers who hired us throughout 2006 as well as the whole gang at Blue Mountain Artists for booking us. The renaissance continues. Well, I think that's about it. Have a great new year and as always, we hope to see you at the shows..... NRPS

 Dec. 24/06

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. We leave on the 27th to start our final tour of 2006. What a year it has been, but more on that later. Just want to to remind everyone to get your tickets early to the five upcoming shows. The Sellersville Theater is already Sold Out and the others are getting close. Tickets are going fast for the 12/30 show at Mexicali Blues with Commander Cody and his band opening. That's going to be a wild night. Tickets are also going fast for New Year's Eve the following night at the same club. We will be recording the New Year's Eve show for a future CD release on RCM LIVE Records. Bob and Betty of all those early Grateful Dead recordings will be coming in from San Francisco to record the show from a remote truck outside the club so as not to take up any space inside. Also the club will be open till 5:00 AM, and we'll play three sets.  As with many New Riders shows in 2006, there will be some special guests stopping by, so if you're heading into the city or elsewhere earlier in the evening, you can still stop by late, share a toast and hear The New Riders. We hope to see you at the shows and again happy holidays.....NRPS

Dec. 13/06

Well, everyone from Team NRPS made it home safe and sound from what can only be described as a fantastic tour of the West Coast. It was great to see so many old friends and make so many new ones. A special thanks has to go out to all the guest musicians that came out to play with us on the tour: Peter Rowan, Mark Karan and Jeff Chimenti of Rat Dog, David Gans, Bob Matthews, Darlene DiDomenico, Gary Vogensen and all The Sky Pilot Merry Pranksters. Thanks every one and all for making the tour what it became, an event onto itself. We would also like to thank Bob Matthews and Tiff Garcia for having us play at the Jerry Garcia art show. We had a blast. Thanks also to David Gans for allowing us to take over his radio show on KPFA for a few hours. By the way, you can still hear that broadcast if you go to this link http://www.kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=17406  then go to Nov. 29.  It was great to play all the old songs and break out some new ones. There are many more new ones coming down the pike so stay tuned. Again thanks to all the fans for coming out to hear live music, to the clubs and theaters for having us and all the musicians for sitting in. You're all the best. By the way we found out today that we made it to youtube.com. This being modern times and all, you can find NRPS old and new along with a video of Michael and Buddy doing Glendale Train at the Rain Desert from a few years back by going to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJuqMzBJYV4&search=nrps%20danielson%20connecticut%20jerry%20garcia. There are a lot of cool videos there. Check them out and enjoy. Don't forget we have five more gigs before we close out the year starting on Dec. 27 at The Iron Horse then heading to The Sellersville and Bearsville Theaters and ending at Mexicali Blues on New Year's Eve. Tickets are going fast for that one along with the night before when we'll be having Commander Cody and his band opening the show. If you plan on going to either show,  get your tickets soon. The last four times we played Mexicali the shows were sold out in advance so get on it now if you want to go. In fact all those shows sold out last time we played those rooms so let's make it happen again. You have the power. See you at the shows.....NRPS

Check out the photo page we just put up some new photos, including one of Peter Rowan sitting in with us on electric guitar. Now that's something you don't see everyday. Also we've been getting lots of emails from people wondering what's up with The DVD "Wanted: Live At Turkey Trot" that we recorded this past summer. It's still being worked on, and we'll hopefully have it available soon. Stay tuned......

Dec. 9/06

It was wild at The Wild Buffalo and all we can say about Wow Hall is wow...Both shows were a lot of fun, but Wow Hall  was especially was a blast due to the performance by The Sky Pilot Merry Pranksters. They came out in between our two sets and then we joined them for a wild funky jam at the end of their skit which was called called Gitmo. Tons of fun was had. Now, down the road we go to Lefty's and then The Red Fox. More later.....NRPS

Dec. 7/06

The last few shows, The Aladdin Theater, The Triple Door and the Yale Hotel were fantastic. The audience really showed us a great time. I did read somewhere that someone was disappointed that John Dawson didn't show up at The Aladdin Theater and dismayed because we said he would be there. We only said that he might be there, and we tried our best to make it happen. Believe me, we were all disappointed. As we told the audience that night if it happens anywhere it will most likely be at The Aladdin because he has family in Portland, but at this point he just wasn't ready to travel all the way from Mexico. We still have our fingers crossed. We want to thank all the folks over on the the philzone.com for all the kind things they have said about our tour out here in the west.... Well, we're back in the States after a day's run up into Canada, and we'll be at The Wild Buffalo tonight. Hope to see ya there..... NRPS

Dec. 4/06

Yesterday was a much needed day off after the whirlwind run through the Bay Area. Well, a day off in a manner of speaking. We spent the day on the bus driving 12 hours to Portland OR from Crystal Bay, NV. The show at The Crystal Bay Casino, as was last time, was sold to near capacity with lots of smiling faces, old friends and new. A few ladies couldn't contain themselves and jumped on stage to dance. Although fun to watch, it's not a good idea with all the wires and gear everywhere so our crew escorted them off and "the train kept a rolling." All in all we had a blast.... Here's some cool stuff for ya, Someone sent over a link of us playing Last Lonely Eagle  with Bob Matthews at Nelson Ledges July 3 2006. You can find it at this link: http://www.RCMLive.com/NRPS/LstLnlyEgl.mp3. Also if you missed our live broadcast on KPFA on Nov. 29 or would like to hear it again, you can find it at this link: http://www.kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=17406. Enjoy. We're going to be putting up a free download page soon where you'll be able to download other cool stuff as well so stay tuned. Also you can find a NRPS interview and story on the Rex Foundations site at this link: http://www.rexfoundation.org/musicianspotlight/nrps.html. Tonight we'll be at the ALADDIN THEATER. See ya there..... NRPS

Dec. 2/06

Well, we finished up our Bay Area shows at The Mystic Theater last night and just like the other three shows it was a rockin' good time. Again, like last night's show we were joined by old friends Peter Rowan, Mark Karan, Bob Matthews and Darlene DiDomenico. All came back for round two, and we also had Gary Vogensen on board for the evening's festivities. Gary played guitar in the New Riders for years with John Dawson before John retired to Mexico. It was great to have him with us. We want to thank all the friends and family that came out to all the shows and to all the musicians: thanks for sharing your talent with us and making the last four days in the Bay Area fantastic. Now, it's on to The Crystal Bay Club on Lake Tahoe for a show tonight. We had a great time here back in the spring, and we're hoping for more of the same. Thanks again for coming out to all the shows. We'll see ya down the road....... NRPS

Dec 1/06

Just back from The Great American Music Hall and all we can say here at NRPS Central  is wow, what a night. Peter Rowan, Mark Karan and  Jeff Chimenti of Rat Dog, David Gans, Bob Matthews and Darlene DiDomenico joined us.  For those of you that don't know, Darlene sang back up vocals on many of the NRPS albums back in the day, and it was great to have her on board. She helped us out with some back up vocals on the John Dawson song Whiskey. We did a lot of the great NRPS tunes and also played some cool old school folk songs and rocked out like a freight train out of control. Peter Rowan even strapped on one of Falzarano's Telecasters midway through the second set and was rockin' out as electric as it gets. Who knows what's going to happen at the Mystic Theater tonight? Some of the highlights included Peggy O, Panama Red, Friend Of The Devil, I Don't Know You, Willie and the Hand Jive and an off the charts Take A Letter Maria. Let us not forget the Johnny Markowski song Higher which pretty much took the roof off the joint. We want to thank all the special guests that came out and played, making the night one to remember. As many of the fans said, "You guys F*ckin' rocked."..... See you at the Mystic....NRPS

Nov.29/06

The Jerry Gracia art show at The Matrix last night was an absolute blast. Lots of old friends and family in attendance with everyone in great sprits and having an awesome time. The art work looked fantastic, and we played two solid sets. Everyone rocked out with us till the last note was played. Tonight we went over to Berkeley to play live on the David Gans show "Dead to the World"  - KPFA  94.1 FM. We played  two hours of New Riders music, and Gans joined us for several tunes and also sang Four Strong Winds, the old Ian Tyson song. David will also be joining us at the Great American Music Hall tomorrow night the 30th. That show, along with the show at the Mystic, will be NRPS and friends. Some of the guys from Rat Dog, the writer of Panama Red and LA Cowboy will be with us (we can't actual use his name but you know him). I hear Bobby Vega and Bob Matthews will also be on board, and you never know who else might show up. It's been a fun time in the Bay Area so far and the next few nights should be more of the same. See ya at the shows...... NRPS

Nov. 23/06

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.....

Well John Dawson may just be "Rollin' into Portland Town". We just spoke with McDuke, and plans are underway to see if we can hook up at the Alladin Theatre in Portland Oregon on Monday December 4th. Marmaduke sounded great and is very excited to come up and play with the band. Keeping our fingers crossed, and don't forget the power of positive thinking.... NRPS

Also it looks like the Bay Area shows at The Matrix, The Great American Music Hall and The Mystic Theater are shaping up to be very interesting events as well. And don't forget to tune in on the 29th of Nov. to the David Gans show "Dead to the World"  - KPFA  94.1 FM  we'll play live from 8:00 to 10:00. At this point the Jerry Gracia art show we're playing at The Matrix in San Francisco is invitation only, but we'll keep you posted should that change..... See ya at the shows.... NRPS

Nov. 21/06

Just back from a short run through the Northeast. The tour was short but sweet. All the shows were sold to near capacity, and the crowds couldn't have been more enthusiastic. All the shows were great, but the show in New York was well, New York. Jeff Mattson from Kettle Joe's/Zen Tricksters joined us for a few songs, and Kenny Kosek played fiddle with us all night. He may join us again on New Year's Eve at Mexicali Blues. We'll keep you posted on that. Some of you might remember Kenny from Jerry Garcia's run on Broadway back in the late 80s. Both he and David were in Jerry's band for that run. It was fantastic to have him and Jeff join us for the evening.  Next week we head to the West Coast for a bunch of shows. There is talk of some very special guests joining us out there as well throughout the tour so keep your ears open, and we'll let you know as it unfolds. Thanks to all who came out to the shows, and have a happy Thanksgiving...... NRPS

Nov. 16/06

We started our winter touring last night at The Stone Church in Newmarket, New Hampshire. The near capacity crowd was there with us till the wee hours of the morning, and we all had a rocking good time. Today we're off the Lebanon, New Hampshire where we'll be playing The Lebanon Opera House. Then it's down to New York City to play The Concert Hall at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Both of those shows are getting close to sold out, so if you want to go to either, get your tickets now. After those two shows we'll be heading down to Baltimore, Maryland to play The 8X10 then back up to NYC to do a Sirius Radio show for Jam on 17 which is the station that Buddy Cage has his show on.  We break for Thanksgiving then head to the West Coast for an extended tour after which we head back to the Northeast for a week long run after Christmas leading up to New Year's Eve. No rest for the weary around here. We'll keep you posted on all the goings on here as we go.....NRPS

Nov. 12/06

Hi, Michael F. here. For the last few days Buddy and I have been teaching at Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp. This is the first time for Buddy, and I'm pretty sure he'll be back because it seems to me like he's having a grand old time. The whole gang thought it was great to have him on board. I'm gonna see if I can get him to tell ya about his experience here later. I've been teaching there three or four times a year for 9 years, and it is always a fantastic time. This weekend was more of the same. Last night G.E. Smith did a show at the Fur Peace Station Theater and man was it rockin'. He opened up the show solo acoustic. It was booked as an electric show, but at the last minute he decided to do some acoustic stuff so he borrowed my Gibson and to the stage he went. After a few acoustic tunes he had Jack Casady and Eric Diaz (Hot Tuna's current drummer) join him. A little later he brought Buddy and me out, and shortly after that he had Jorma come out. The show was sold out, and I'm here to tell you a rocking good time was had by all. G. E. cover a lot of ground playing everything from traditional folk to funky blues from a Grateful Dead tune (Sugaree) to one by Cool and The Gang. Buddy Cage rocked on the Cool and The Gang song, man you should've heard that. Some of the fans told me Buddy was the  nitroglycerine that made the whole band explode. I'd have to agree with them. I even got to do one of my songs, When There's Two There's Trouble  which I cut for my next CD and features Buddy and Vassar Clements. All in all we had a blast. Now it's time to head home and get ready for the next NRPS tour which starts on Wednesday. See ya at the shows.....MF

Nov. 6/06

Well, I guess the big news right now is the launching of this website. This version of the band, the renaissance, so to speak, has now been together for more than a year and we've played over 100 shows. Hard to believe as it seems like just yesterday we played that first show at the Rain Desert up in Connecticut. Since then we've been all over the country playing clubs, theaters and festivals, over a third of which were sold out. We couldn't have asked for a better response from the fans and our musician friends alike. Over the past year some amazing musicians have come out and joined us on stage: Robert Hunter, Bob Weir, John Popper, Donna Jean Godchaux, Jeff Mattson, Keller Williams, Eric Weisberg, David Gans, Bob Matthews, Mookie Siegel, Billy Laymon and Pete Sears. Thanks guys for a rocking good time. We have more than 20 shows to play before the year's end so who knows what might happen? Our next run starts on the East Coast and includes another stop in NYC at The Concert Hall at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. The last time we were in NYC, it was the sold-out show at the Canal Room which was a wild night. The upcoming show on Nov. 18th should be just as wild. After Thanksgiving we head to the West Coast again for the second time this year. The trip earlier in the year was amazing, and we're hoping this trip is more of the same. The tour was due to open in San Francisco on Nov. 30 at The Great American Music Hall with a NRPS and Friends show. We've invited a bunch of old Bay Area friends down to sit in with us, and it should be pretty interesting. As I've said, that was going to be the first show in the Bay Area, but two more really cool events have been added to the tour. First, The New Riders are confirmed for Bob Matthews and Tiff Garcia's press conference and art exhibition at the Matrix in San Francisco's Wharf (rat) District on Tuesday, Nov. 28.  Stanley Mouse is the Art Director, and Major Gavin will be the Celebrity Guest for the event which will include the unveiling of five oil on canvas paintings that Jerry Garcia created while attending the S.F. Institute of Art under the teaching of Elmer Bishof. Jerry gave the paintings to his brother Tiff as a gift long ago, and Bob feels that the New Riders would be the best musical and family representation for this special event. Mark your calendars. Then, on the 29th we will head to Berkeley for a David Gans radio show on KPFA. We'll play from 9:00 - 11:00 pm live over the air waves so don't forget to tune in. When those three events are over, we'll head to the North Bay to play The Mystic Theater in Petaluma. Our last show there sold out. It's gonna be a busy few days in the great Bay Area. You can check out the rest of the dates on the tour page.......... Getting back to the past year, earlier this summer we recorded a live DVD/CD called "Wanted, Live at Turkey Trot" which should be available sometime in late November. Also, back in June Jambands.com held a contest to see Which band [left] you most impressed with the drummer/percussionist and New Riders drummer Johnny Markowski won hands down, beating out some pretty heavy competition. The New Riders are looking forward to what's next so stay tuned and tell a friend. If you think someone might be interested in this website, please forward it to them and help spread the word. Oh yeah, one more thing -- don't forget to VOTE on Nov. 7......NRPS
